Tentative title: Diseases of Oak and Other Beloved Trees
Presented by: Jan Byrne, Plant Pathologist, Michigan State University
Jan Byrne earned a PhD in plant pathology from Michigan State University. She is currently a faculty member of the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences and member of a multi-disciplinary diagnostic team, where she specializes in fungal diseases of plants, especially those that attack trees and shrubs. Every year, the Plant & Pest Diagnostic lab receives approximately 1,000 – 1,500 plant samples for analysis. These samples are primarily from within Michigan, submitted by both commercial growers and private citizens. Her talk will describe diseases that threaten some of our favorite trees, and will touch on what we can do to protect them.

Title: Invasive Plants
Presented by Katie Grzesiak, Terrestrial Invasive Species Coordinator, Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Katie Grzesiak earned a master’s degree in conservation ecology from the University of Michigan in 2013. She then became Manistee County’s Coordinator for the Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network. In 2022, she assumed state-wide responsibilities when she became the Terrestrial Invasive Species Coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Her presentation will focus on invasive plants in Michigan and methods of control, as well as native plants that are desirable alternatives for our gardens.

Pruning Trees and ShrubsThat You Love
Presented by Ron Perry Professor Emeritus MSU Department Horticulture
Ron Perry earned both his MA and PhD degrees from Texas A&M. He subsequently joined the MSU De-partment of Horticulture specializing in fruit and physiology associated with pruning. He moved through the academic ranks and served as De-partment Chair for seven years. He also developed courses on fruit trees, grapes, wine appreciation, and pruning woody perennials particularly ornamental trees and shrubs, grapes, wine appreciation, and pruning woody perennials particularly ornamental trees and shrubs.
His recent book “Espalier Fruit Plantings for Northern Gardens” contains examples that are on display in the MSU Horticul-ture Gardens; 100% of the proceeds from sales of the book go to support the gardens. For his pruning demonstration, we will meet at the Central Park Pavilion and walk into the Historical Village, weather permitting.

Presented by: Art Cameron, Professor Emeritus, MSU Dept of Horticulture
An avid botanist and gardener, Art Cameron is renowned for his exuberant personality and passion for plants. During his role as Director of the MSU Horticulture Gardens, Art worked to add education, inspiration and creative flair to public gardens. Art and his wife Marlene have a lovely terraced garden at their home in Haslett, where they have creatively combined edible and ornamental plants with artful touches in a small space.
Creating your own successful garden can take years, long term vision and a sense of hope. In this presentation, Art will share a wealth of creative tricks that can help make your garden dreams find fruition, regardless of what you grow! Art will describe how he approaches practical topics such as design, plant selection, establishment, and subsequent care, sharing ideas for making the most of growing ornamentals and vegetables using raised beds, bamboo trellises, and just enough love and care. He will do his best to help you enjoy yourself while creating an artful and successful garden that inspires and titillates the senses.
