President's Message
Rooted in our Community |
Community service has been an integral part of our Meridian Garden Club since its inception.
Our members spend hundreds of hours tending public gardens every year. We cherish and nurture the gardens
of the Meridian Historical Village and salute the Friends of Historic Meridian, an organization that provides similar care to the buildings, provides programs and activities to the community, and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024.
We hope and expect that our members will contribute to the goals and activities of our club by participating in the maintenance of the public gardens and by contributing to other club projects. In the previous year we undertook several community service initiatives:
• At our spring plant sale we added native plant seedlings to our perennial offerings and educated our customers through
handouts and by having a local expert speak about native plants.
• We began a new outreach program to bring donated flowers each month to the to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility,
where club volunteers make bouquets with residents who select the types and colors of flowers they would enjoy in their rooms.
• In partnership with the Meridian Green Grants Program, we funded a new garden grants program to encourage local schools to
install gardens that students help to create and maintain.
Our club made many charitable donations to local organizations that support gardening and horticulture and we increased our
donation to the Michigan Garden Club Scholarship fund to $1000, which will be awarded to an MSU Horticulture student.
Through more than 50 years of public service, the Meridian Garden Club has continued to be firmly rooted in our community.
